How to teach Origami to young People?

Post by Tavin » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:20 pm

I'm rather new to teaching and held my first course about one year ago, for six months each week.
It thought school children age 10-15 it was a group of 5-10 . My Problem was that quite a few of them did not show to much interest and got rather bored. I managed to learn from my mistakes and improve by choosing easier models and having play breaks. But still I was not satisfied with the way the course went. And want to do better in the future?

anyone has general pointers on teaching children origami?

PS: I hope this is the right section for this topic

Continuum in origami teaching is rare in my experience. Only once I had a group for a month.
Advanced children and adult beginners. Then I started contemplating imaginary origami toolkits I could draw from for each individual, different as they may be. Posted them on my blog: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qEom8cSzCqg/T ... oolkit.jpg
Blog was also a backup for beginners:http://sanja-origamiart.blogspot.com/20 ... chive.html
As you can imagine, I always get a new group. Size varies from ten to almost eighty at one event. Before I start teaching I like to learn what they already know, how they feel, what are their interests, what they like. Then I look into my imaginary toolkits to find what they might need in origami.

Most helpful in my teaching so far? Enthusiasm about modern origami art and artists, chatting/stories accompanying a sequence of folding, challenges for advanced, tips of techniques.

thanks, the tool-kit was useful in particular!
My Czech is non-existent, but luckily the diagrams on (your?) Blog are good and so understandable without language. I like the improvement of the crane, I like this going away from "here is a instruction follow it" and rather "here is a instruction for your consideration, make of it what you want"

I am writing a wiki on the subject in Spanish.
Maybe it will be useful, http://origamienlaescuela.wikispaces.com/

I accept ideas, suggestions and translators.

Thank you!
