Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel
(1782 Oberweißbach; + 1852 Marienthal).

A German pedagog who founded the first Kindergarten in 1839. He took and developed models from the German folding tradition into a program in the Kindergarten. He called them forms of beauty, forms of life and forms of knowledge. When his followers introduced the Kindergarten in Japan in the 1870s, Japanese teachers called 'paper-folding' for the first time 'origami'.

There is a great book on Froebel's work: "Inventing Kindergarten" by Norman Brosterman

Here I quote a review:

"A thorough tracing of the ideas and uses of materials (gifts/occupations) in the early kindergarten movement. The juxtaposition of pictures of the kindergarten exercises and manipulatives with the adult abstract art of 20th century Cubism, Constructivism, and architectural planning is stimulating and thought provoking. This book is both delightful reading and browsing, and intellectually fresh in probing connections between childhood experience and adult art expression. The respect paid to Froebel is also gratifying."
